Our Tests of Electric Tea Kettles

To arrive at a lineup of kettles, we surveyed recent recommendations from other online review sites. We also looked at the highest-rated models on Amazon and polled Epicurious editors for their personal recommendations. Our final selection of candidates included models from the main categories temperature control, basic and gooseneck. Many electric kettle models that are lower priced than others use plastic. But, based on current science, it seems sensible to reduce plastic usage in your kitchen. Any kettles with carafes made of mainly plastic were excluded from the test. (Models with silicone or plastic handles were allowed given that hot water didn’t come in contact with plastic.) We included a couple of low-cost options in stainless steel among the applicants.

Here are the factors we considered when evaluating each model.

Test Electric Kettles

RisePro thermocouple thermometer served as a thermometer to measure the eight electric kettles. The thermocouple measured how fast each kettle could boil 3 cups water, and also how stable each model’s hold-temperature function was for water temperatures over 10 minutes.

Three thermocouple monitors were used to watch the boiling test. The temperature of each kettle was monitored by three different sensors. Each kettle was tested with water heated to room temperature, approximately 75 degrees F. Also, each test was visually confirmed by me that the water had reached a boiling boil within the kettle.

The thermocouple thermometer was used to determine the average, minimum and maximum temperatures during the 10 minute period. This table shows the average time each kettle took to reach 212 degrees, as well as the minimum, maximum, and average temperature for each kettle that had a hold-temperature function lasting more than 10 minutes.

Keep in mind that the thermocouple readings aren’t exact and that there will be slight variation based on placement during testing. This being said, I put the thermocouples halfway down in the kettle.

While it’s not the most thrilling thing that we’ve ever done, watching water boil was something we enjoyed. However, we wanted our readers to have solid recommendations. To do this we answered these questions:

Pre-boil How simple was it to fill and assemble the electric kettle. Is the manual really helpful? How easy was it to use the controls?

Boil What made it easy to heat the boiling water? Is the boiling water left in the kettle or does it escape at some point during the boiling? Was there a boil notification light or sound?

Post-boil How easy was it to clean and store? Do you think it looks good enough to use on a regular basis in your kitchen? It was easy to use overall.
