YCA helps to remove the uncertainty and fear that comes with being a young cook by offering a secure environment for creativity and exploration. Students can develop their skills and continue to improve them through weekly classes. Each class is unique and focuses on a different monthly theme. It teaches students new skills in food preparation, presentation, and cooking. You can also drop in for classes, parties, camps and workshops, as well as Chefs Club memberships.

Richmond’s Chef Partners Unite to Bring Healthful Cooking Classes To Their Community
La Casa de la Salud representative cooks Tailgate Chili. recipe.heart.org. The American Heart Association (AHA), Richmond VA, brought together several culinary partners to share their passion for cooking.
AHA’s Simple Cooking with Heart was taught to five members of the local community. SCWH has the goal to give basic culinary skills, such as cutting, mixing and dicing. Increase food safety awareness and let participants create delicious, simple recipes that are healthy for the heart. The chef partners have the knowledge and tools to successfully implement this program in their communities. These communities include a variety of groups across the city like students and seniors in the East End and members of the region’s growing Latino and Hispanic community.
How one lives can impact how long and healthy they live. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world and African American, Hispanic and Latino communities are at an even greater risk.

Dedra Blount-Cook and Debra Brbson. Five mobile kitchens will be provided to these partners by Kathie Markel, VCU Health, the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation and Steve and Kathie Markel. They include recipes, a cirriculum and all of the required equipment for teaching classes. Additionally, participants will get a stipend for ingredients that they can use to hold their own cooking classes. Participants will receive a healthy meal and skills for future cooking classes at no cost.
I like the fact that each recipe includes the price per portion. Our seniors often say they cannot afford healthy food. But if you show them this $3.44/serving meal, it will be a way to show them that it is possible,” stated Dr. Ethlyn McGeen-Gibson. Dedra Blount, Chef, was assisted by Debra Brabson. Dedra, Debra and Debra come from Hampton Roads. Dedra leads cooking demonstrations at AHA Mobile Kitchen.
