Japanese methods that have been around for years avoid this issue. Japanese-style flash-brewing uses hot water but also takes in the temperature of your vessel. This means the total water consumption is not increased. You can make a more flavourful and dynamic iced coffee by putting hot, aromatically rich coffee directly onto ice.
The theory of espresso is an exception to the rule. You can see it in action below. Your espresso machine will likely make shots with enough concentrated coffee to withstand some dilution.
