This is a very large size. The equivalent in Europe is 1L.

This will be about 950ml. You should put 60g of your favorite coffee on top and add 900ml to the mixture. Do not exceed 900, as it could overflow.

What's the right French Press Ratio for coffee? (Coffee-to-Water Ratio)

There's no one-size-fits all solution. The world is full of different coffee tastes, roasts and beans. That can cause each cup of coffee to be completely unique. Consider starting with a specific ratio. Once you have tasted it, then modify the recipe to make it more consistent.

THE RULE OF THUMB: Use a ratio of 1:15 coffee to water. You need to use 15g of water for every gram of coffee. That's about three tablespoons of coffee per cup. As this is the beginning, it's likely to be quite weak. If your coffee becomes weak, add some more.

Below, you'll find a French Press ratio calculator + chart.

How to use the calculator: First, click the red number under "how much coffee do you want to brew in fluid ounces?" and enter your number. You can refer to our table if necessary:

Next, click the red number under "how strong do you want your coffee?" It has a range for strength, from 1 to 7.

Here are some things that you might need

Credit: Amazon Whole Coffee Beans: Good coffee starts with good beans ($15, Amazon ). While you can purchase them already ground, it is best to grind them yourself. French press coffee calls for uniformly-ground beans about the consistency of breadcrumbs. A smaller size of grains such as pre-ground coffee beans will filter through and cause sediment.

Burr Coffee Grinder. The burr grind is the best way to get consistent-sized coffee beans. Burr coffee grinders are made up of two surfaces, which can be used to grind the beans like a blender. To adjust the size and grind, the coffee beans can be ground between the two surfaces. Burr grinders tend to make a more uniform grind, making them ideal for French press. There are two options: You can buy either a manual grinder ($44 on Amazon) or an electric one ($98 on Amazon). Standard measuring cups will work, but a digital food scale is the best and most accurate way to measure beans. An eight-cup press holds four cups of water. Each cup yields eight cups. Half of a cup equals 56 grams. For a coffee/water ratio of 15 grams per gram, it is advisable to use half a cup. For 56g of coffee that means 840 grams water or 3 1/2 cups. However, depending on the strength of your coffee you may need up to 4 cups. This table gives a rough guideline for water/coffee proportions.

1 cup water (8 fluid-ounces) 2 cups coffee beans (14g).

2 cups water (16 fluid-ounces) 1/4 cup coffee beans (82.5 grams)

4 cups of water, 32 fluid ounces. 1/2 cup coffee beans (56g).

8 cups of water (64 fluid ounces) 1 cup coffee beans (112 grams)

Boiling Water

2. Coffee taken in too much.

French pressing is all about the espresso-to-water ratio. It is essential that you take your time when extracting the coffee. French press coffee can be prepared in a 1:10 ratio, which is 1 gram coffee per 10 g water. Although this can be variable, others may use a higher ratio. I prefer 1:10, which is easy to remember and easily calculate.

Now granted, not everyone wants to measure out their coffee every time they brew a batch. That's fine, but it is worth your time to figure out approximately how much coffee and water you need. For example, when I'm traveling I don't carry a scale with me ( some people do ), but I know my travel grinder grinds about 40 grams of coffee, and I know about where I need to fill the French press to in order to get around 400 grams of water. Even though it may not be the most accurate or consistent method, it can work when you have no scale.
