Central Market’s in-person cooking classes are returning and they are selling out fast

Austin American-Statesman Central Market’s cooking classes are back.

After a six-month break, classes in-store have resumed at six different stores throughout the state. This includes the one located on North Lamar Boulevard.

Vance Ely is a longtime chef and manager at the school. After months of preparation, they decided to re-open. There are no distancing protocol in place. Instead, students will be able to focus on projects they can cook.

Ely says that “people are searching for live feedback and hands on classes,” and the make-and-take classes meet this need.

In each class eight people can be present. Instructors prepare some dish beforehand so that students can taste it during class. But the aim is to have them home with the dumplings, ravioli or decorated cakes.

“This type of class, before COVID-19 was an extremely difficult sell as people really wanted to cook and make it in class,” he said. Now, these make-and-take classes are selling out weeks ahead of time.

Another factor that is driving ticket sales is people are at home cooking more than ever and some are looking for additional educational support so they can expand their at-home repertoire, he says.

Ely says that every class has changed. Each class is followed by a cleaning of the kitchen area.

A recent Zoom livestream featuring Kenji Lopez-Alt was another success in Central Market’s newly added culinary classes. It featured a Zoom stream with Kenji Lopez – Alt, who recently published “Every Night Is Pizza Night,” which is a book for children about Pipo. She believes that pizza is the best in the world, until she visits other countries, where she discovers there are so many more “best” food options.

Lopez-Alt read the book and then hosted a virtual cook-along to make chicken and vegetable dumplings. Either they can watch only the live stream or they can buy an entire kit that allows them to take part at home.
